This tutorial is great for brush sets with images in them. Like, the Flames & Fire brush set, for example. Flames aren’t all orange. They have some oranges, yellows, and reds in them at varying stages of “hotness.” You could use this tutorial to add those colors!
This technique is the single most important skill that I developped that helps me to make brushes look more “real” - almost like images that you can control the colors of. Whenever people ask me how I’ve managed to make the brushes look so great and full of different colors in the preview images, THIS is the technique that I used.
Feedback on the tutorial is very welcome!

Hi there! I wanted to thank you for the use of your fantastic brushes and patterns. Very cool, all. I practically swooned when I saw you had fabrics..those lil guys are hard to find if you want something aside from canvas or burlap.
Your color in brushes tutorial was most helpful. I’m brand new to ps..trying to be self taught wasn’t cutting it, I’m afraid. So..maybe now my brushes will look more like actual images and less like stickers!
I also wanted to ask if you knew offhand where I might find a simple tutorial on how to use recorded actions/effects. I’m having a wonderful time downloading all these snazzy things…leather, diamonds…but haven’t figured out how to use ‘em yet.
Your tutorials are much more user friendly, so I figured you might know of some other tut sites that are actually user friendly. Also, I noticed some of your brushes were designed for dig scrap, and I’m looking for tut on creation of elements, as well. Buttons, bottles, bows, frames, etc.
Thanks again for the wonderful tools. You are a very creative chiquita! Oh, and hope your surgery went fab and your feeling better.
Happy trails…

hello! thank you for your brushes, they’re beautiful…
but, i looked into your tutorial on how to multi colour your brushes and it’s somewhat complecated, what version of photoshop do i have to have
otherwise it looks very promising, cuz although brushes are cool, they tend to look boring.
thanks again,

you are my new favorite profesor of photoshop.thank s for tutorials and brush.
Your work is beautiful… love the brushes. I feel so dense though … I keep trying and I must be missing something in the using multiple colors with brushes tutorials. Is there somewhere the tutorial is a video?
Fabulous! Can’t wait to try it out. I’ve been wondering about this for a long time actually, and it’s going to be hugely helpful. Would you mind if I linked to your tutorials in my “Useful Icon Links” section of my icon journal’s profile page (http://fading-coal.livejournal.com/profile)?
There was me thinking that brushes could only be one colour.
Well I have learned something new today thanks to your tutorial.
Cheers.
thanks a lot for this tutorial!!! *____* it’s wonderful!!!!
I’ve been using a lot of your brushes while learning how to do more than crop pictures! Thank you so much for being so generous!
I was really looking forward to learning how to add multiple colors to a brush. I’ve been using elements and have usually been able to convert directions to fit with elements, but this tutorial has me stumped. I can’t find the “f” icon to lead to the color overlay.
Then I wondered if there was a longer way to get to color overlay and couldn’t find it.
Do you know if this technique is possible in elements? BTW - I’m using 3.0 ( a little old, I know).
Thanks again!
I want to thank you soooooooooooooooooooo much for the beautiful artwork and the tutorials!!! I just DISCOVERED you today from a lo on a digi scrapbooking site. It was beautiful!!! Feel in love with the wings and dandelions and HAD to find you.
I DO have a question. I have JUST been selected to be a member of an online digital scrapbooking team. They primarily were interested in me because of my hand-drawn doodles, but they’re so busy doing a HUGE project that they can’t answer all my questions. My first is the most important to me if you know the answer….
1. How do you turn a colored (pre-colored) doodle (or element…whatever) into a ping file. The only way I have found is to scan it and take the original scan and start painstakingly erasing it. I KNOW there has to be a better way. Do you know?
2. I have PSE4 and though I can crop uneven, circular…anything in publishing programs, I’ll be (#*$*$& if I can figure out how to do it in Adobe??? Do you know this?
If you do, would you please email me at the above address?
Thank you so much for EVERYTHING…even if you can’t answer the questions. You’re a wonderful talent…and can’t wait to try all your tutorials.
Kathi
Thanks so much for the kind words, Kathi! I’m afraid I haven’t played around with PSE since version 2, and I remember very little of it. I also don’t do much cropping, but whatever I do crop I basically use the magic wand tool to select and keep adding to that selection until it’s what I want, then delete the rest. So I don’t use the cropping tool much.
As for how to remove the background to make a transparent PNG file, I’m afraid that erasing it is about all you can do. HOWEVER, there are programs that will aid you in this task. Photoshop CS has one called Fluid Mask. You’re using Elements, though… so I have no idea what there is available for that. Every single brush that I’ve made, I’ve made by painstakingly erasing the background. Sometimes that’s easier than other times, if there’s a mostly solid background that of course makes it easier. I’ve tried using those mask programs, but they just don’t work as well as I’d like in most cases… and so I switch back to the old fashioned erasing way that I’ve been using. Still, you could try to Google a search for a mask program that will remove backgrounds. Maybe you’ll have better luck than me.
Good luck, and sorry I couldn’t be more help!
Forgive me if I sound crazy - but I LOVE YOU!!!!! You have got so much talent and you are just so awesome for sharing it with us. Wish I could pick your brain!!!! I need this talent bottled up and shipped to me.
haha, thanks so much, Denise.
