Creating Realistic Embroidered Text or Designs in Photoshop

This is a fairly long tutorial. But, there’s a reason for that. I’d seen several other tutorials out there on Embroidered text, and they just weren’t as detailed or realistic as I would have liked to see them. So, I created this one. With it, you should be able to create some fairly realistic “embroidery” in Photoshop.

A healthy knowledge of web design can help greatly when you are deciding on which web site design you are going to go with for your site; a good web design firm can help make you one if you don’t know enough about web page design to make your own.

While this tutorial should be followable by beginners, to get the full effects from it (knowing how to “play around” with the different settings that I suggest in the end to get your desired effect, for instance), you should know some of the basics of Photoshop. Like, what multiply does versus screen, etc. Even if you’re a beginner, however, you should be able to follow my more precise instructions and get a good result. If you have ANY questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments. I will answer them. With this tutorial being as long and in depth as it is, I want to be sure it’s understood! Enjoy. :)

(The brush set that I use to create the lines can be found here: http://www.obsidiandawn.com/brushes/sets/micro-patterns-brushes.php )

I love these tutorials… except for one thing: why do you ignore the ever-increasing numbers of Mac users? Or even provide a chart that equates PC commands to those on a Mac? (This could be a one-time chart on each tutorial, so you don’t have to continuously say, “On a Mac, click so-and-so.”)
I would gladly print out such a chart to keep for referencing so I don’t end up with trial-and-error guessing.
Thanks,
Allie

Thanks! I would really love to be able to share how to do this stuff on a Mac! If I had a clue how to do so, I would. :( I was actually thinking about this just the other day… that I should find a way to give an equivalent Mac command for these things.

Here’s my problem. I like to give tutorials based on MY experience, and not based off what some random website says is “how to do something” (and oftentimes, they’re so very wrong).. and that’s how I’d have to look up Mac shortcuts and whatnot! I will probably succumb at some point fairly soon, because I really do want to make it easy for everyone… just not sure yet what the best way to go about it is. I want to make sure the info is right. As soon as I do, I’ll update them. :)

Thanks for the input, and sorry for the inconvenience! In the meantime, I’m pretty sure I give actual menu commands for anything that I list shortcut keys for somewhere in the tutorial. Are those different, too?

Thanks for a very interesting tutorial! I work on a Mac and am just used to having to “translate” so this was no problem to me.
Only other information that I would like to have had is what size document or resolution that you were working at, what point size on the font. I understand that it’s up to the user, but I wanted to know that I was in the same ballpark on various choices of blurs, etc. Enjoyed the tutorial & was happy with the results.
I’m amazed that I had missed the micro brushes & patterns! I can see LOTS of potential for them. THANKS again!

Hi! I downloaded your brush set from the link above and do not see any files that have an .abr extension. Do I need to do something to the jpg files to convert them to .abr so I can upload them as brushes?

Thanks,
Leslie

Stephanie,
Nevermind…I figured out how to turn the jpegs into brush files. :) Thanks for the tut. This may be exactly what I was looking for!

Leslie, I sent you an email, but just to make sure it’s clear for everyone else… you need to click on the “DOWNLOAD BRUSHES NOW” link or the image itself. The bottom link is to an “image pack” that is made up of JPGs that the brushes are made up of.

I’m thinking seriously about adding another place to download the brushes just above the image pack download link, so that they’re right next to each other and people can see the difference and click on the right one. Hopefully that’ll help. One day when I have a few hours, I’ll be sure to do that!

Hello, I found this page googling for a tutorial on embroidery. Under each step number I just see a blank area?? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Eek! You two aren’t doing anything wrong - when I upgraded to the new version of Wordpress, apparently I didn’t re-upload these photos. I’m out of town on a family emergency, so I just don’t have them with me to put back up right now. But, I’ll get them back up again ASAP.

Actually, on second thought, I’ll just put up the version of it where I condensed them all into one image, just so people can see it for now. Hope it works now, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Thanks for this tutorial. It really helped me. I don’t think I could get everything exactly like you, but I’m sure different fonts can affect that.

Well, I LOVE THIS ONE. But, I’m confused on how to animate things in cs2. Could you make a tutorial on that? That’d be AMAZING.
