Realistic Flames in Photoshop Tutorial

The flames brush set has always been one of my most popular sets. I’ve seen some people do amazing things with it.

Similarly, one of my most popular questions is: “How do you make your flames brushes look like they do in your preview?”

Well, not only do I give you an in-depth tutorial as an answer, but I am also providing a tool to help make it even easier to achieve those realistic flames looks that you desire.

There’s a double release today, since they kind of go together… the realistic flames tutorial and a set of completely seamless flames patterns.

I AM on a roll lately, I agree! I’ve been psyched about brushes lately, and I have a list of about FIFTY different sets that have come to my mind over the last few weeks. I’ve decided to release a set a week, with that many waiting on the plate I won’t be running out anytime soon :)

Thanks, and so glad you like em!

Hi, I really really love your brushes, patterns and tutorials, but I have a problem with this one. From the “gradiant overlay” to the end, I don’t manage to have the same result as you. With or without the Gradient layer, the result is the same, I don’t understand. I precise that I am French and that I have Photoshop CS3.

Thank you anyway for you wonderfull website !

My knowledge of Photoshop Elements is pretty limited. I know that almost
everything is the same, but Elements has some different ways of doing a few
things. But this tutorial should definitely work. However, to add the
pattern, it’s a bit different. I just don’t remember how! You could check
online for how to add a pattern in Elements, and that would show you the
basic jist of it, then do the same thing with my patterns… I’m so sorry I
can’t help out more! I don’t have a copy of Elements and haven’t for years.
:(

I’ve mastered the concept of creating brush..now how do I email it to someone else? I can’t seem to locate the file that I created in the brush file to attach. What am I doing wrong? THANKS!

Hi Stephanie,

I love your brushes and have used a few of them before. This tutorial is brilliant…I’m trying to use it on a checkered flag to burn holes in it (just have to remember how to burn holes, been awhile!).

Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to see the new stuff you do!

I just tested them, and they worked okay for me! You must have gotten a bad download. That happens sometimes. Stinks when it happens on a BIG download like that, I know… sorry for the inconvenience!

Let me know if you continue to have problems, Chrissy, and perhaps I can email you a non-compressed version or somesuch.

Hi i used this and it worked out great for the black backround. However, when i had my picture of my friends band.. i followed the instructions but then it turns into this!!!
what did i do wrong and what should i do to fix it..
i want the band picture the way it was normally just with flames at the ottom, without the colors affecting it

Well, I can’t tell 100% from the picture that you showed me… since I can’t tell what all of the different attributes are for each layer of your image. However, that top layer seems to be what’s doing it. Click on the small eye next to that layer to make it invisible briefly, and see if the band members are still all orange. It looks like you have a color overlay on that layer, and it may be affecting the layers beneath it if you have the layer attributes (up at the top) set to “Color” or anything other than “Normal.”

But if you followed my tutorial exactly, that shouldn’t be happening. Here’s some steps that you may have missed.

Perhaps you didn’t create a new layer at the beginning, where you used the flames brushes? Those should be on their own, new layer.

If you did, then the other place that could have screwed it up is part 7. It has you click on the background layer and then make a new layer above it. Then click on the original flames layer and THEN merge down. If you didn’t create that new layer, then when you merged down, you merged the flames layer with the ORIGINAL photo. That would mean that you’re then applying those colors and gradient overlays to the original photo, too. I’m going to guess this is where it went wrong.

When you’re done, if you followed the tutorial exactly, then you should only have TWO layers. You seem to have 4.

My suggestion, even though it may seem tedious, is to go through the whole tutorial again. Because I’m fairly sure that step 7 is where it got screwed up, and then you applied that gradient to the whole thing rather than just the flames because of it.

Hope this helps, and sorry I couldn’t be any more specific! It’s hard to troubleshoot these things from just a screenshot. :)

Stephanie

Thanks!
When i clicked the eye for the adjustment layer, they werent orange.
But what i did though wasi combined some steps thatyou had with this tutorial-
http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Quick-Flames/9771
haha stupid i know but the flames turned out really good.. but it messed up the other picture.. maybe if you can please take a look and see if those steps on that tutorial is the cause of the screw up…
Thank you so much.. lol

I’m out of town taking care of my mother-in-law, who just had an operation. I don’t have a computer with Photoshop with me to be able to check that stuff, sorry! But I’m going to say that yes, that IS what must have done it… either that tutorial or the fact that you’re trying to combine two of them has caused that problem. Because I KNOW mine works, and will NOT affect any other layers. Sorry that I can’t help you more than that! Good luck!

Hi,
I have just finished your flames tutorial and just wanted to say thanks, :). Ive learned so much more, i guess you never stop learning!. I recently done some funeral service sheets and used Macromedia Fireworks, Snagit, and M/soft Publisher. I now know all i needed was PS/CS, which would have made my service sheets much more better although i had great feedback for them,, Once again, Thank you and keep up the good work. Peace!!:), Johnny

Hi Stephanie..

Having a problem with a brush I designed for a client of mine, and I my thoughts immediately turned to you for help, with your master brush skills! lol

I emailed the brush to him, he successfully loaded the brush into CS2. When he selects the brush, there is no “preview” of what the brush will look like when applied attatched to the cursor. In other words, rather than seeing the little sketch of the brush to help you position and size the brush correctly, he just has a regular cursor. When I had him select one of the standard brushes, there is not a little circle either.

We went into the cursor preferences box and I had him select “Normal brush tip” but this did not help the situation.

Any ideas of what is going on? I have sent the brush file to other people and it works just fine. I can send them to you as well, if you would like me to .

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Alicia

Wow! I have NO idea what could be causing that. I’m going to say it’s definitely one of his settings in Photoshop. You may have to contact Adobe about it, actually. I didn’t even know there was a cursor preferences box! (Not anything I’ve ever had any reason to mess with, lol!)

The ONLY time that I don’t see my cursor is if:
a. the brush was made with VERY light coloration (the b&w would basically be all really light gray, no blacks)
b. the brush is HUGE, and the canvas size is small - if the brush is bigger than the canvas, you won’t see it

That’s all I can think of. Sorry, and hope that you get this all straightened out!
