And you could... but it wouldn't necessarily look very good, because it wouldn't be "seamless" - meaning that the pattern can repeat over and over again and the overlaps fit together perfectly. I'm actually working on a tutorial that explains how to make seamless patterns, though, so that may come in handy for you! Once I get off my lazy butt and finish it. :) It’s not!
